The Grant boys’ soccer season is almost here, an exciting time for these boys as they have been preparing all of fall. Led by coach Corona, the boys have been doing significantly better, with a few impressive wins early into the season.

However, it is apparent that some may need to learn the rules of soccer, so before watching the boys play, these are some things to know. Soccer is a sport that consists of 2 teams with 11 players each that face off against each other in a 90-minute match (80 minutes for a high school match). The main goal of the sport is to score a goal, which is getting the ball past all of the opposing team's players with the help of one’s teammates and getting it inside the plan, which is worth one point. Nonetheless, it provides a challenge, as you are not allowed to use your hands unless you are the goalkeeper. In addition, the main components of soccer include passing, dribbling, and shooting, all of which are skills that take significant amounts of drive, determination, and work ethic to master.

The first JV and Varsity soccer games of the season came down with a 3-1 loss in a non-league game against San Fernando for both teams, but it did not discourage them. Instead, the teams, especially Varsity, took the loss as a learning experience and successfully defeated SOCES 2-1 in a friendly match. The lancers’ next game is against Van Nuys, with Varsity playing at 5:00 p:m and JV at 3:30 p:m. Following that will be the first league game which will be played on December 9 against Chavez, with Varsity playing at 4:30 and JV at 3. Be sure to mark your calendars and come to the field to cheer the lancer boys to victory as they take on their next challenge!
